Explosion Takes 3 Police Officers While Executing Property Removal Procedure in Italy
Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen additional individuals got wounded in a seemingly premeditated detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.
How It Happened
The explosion took place as police and firefighters approached the residence in the vicinity of Verona to enforce an court-ordered eviction for two brothers and a sister in their late 50s and mid-60s.
Each of the three deceased individuals were members of the Italian military police.
Arrests and Aftermath
One male and one female were arrested at the site and one more individual who fled after the incident was found shortly later. All three have been taken to the hospital.
The blast could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location displayed the structure left as a mass of wreckage.
“We are in a period of mourning,” commented the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to displace the three siblings in the earlier times.
Financial Context
The head of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the residence was facing an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the three owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to talk with the siblings who had secured themselves into the property. When the Carabinieri came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), investigators suspect one of the residents set off the detonation.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno informed the media.
“A gas cylinder had been activated, and the detonation precisely impacted our members,” he added.
Incendiary devices were also discovered at the site, the minister confirmed.
Injuries and Destruction
Injured individuals by the blast included an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as three members of national police and a fire services member.
Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the property was in a poor condition and had was without power.
The official believed the detonation had happened on a floor above the access point and informed reporters it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he mentioned officers had “detected a whistling noise, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” local residents told local news, noting that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the trio of personnel who had been killed in the line of duty.
